March 3, 2008

Join us at HydroSports, Wednesday evening March 5, for the March Dive Club meeting starting with a pot luck dinner at 6:30 PM. Our key topics will be speakers for future meetings and planned club dives for the rest of 2008. In particular, we'll be discussing what to expect this coming Saturday when we dive the Edmonds Underwater Park north of Seattle. Remember, club membership is participation-based, no dues.

Bring a friend to a Discover Scuba event Tuesday night March 11. Meet at HydroSports at 6:15 PM. Share the adventure!

Join HydroSports for dives this coming Saturday, March 8, at the Edmonds Underwater Park. The park is owned and maintained by the City of Edmonds, just north of Seattle. Developed over the past 40 years, the park has underwater "trails" with guide lines covering several acres of ocean. Large and small structure has been placed on the trails by a dedicated team of volunteers.

Join Lee and Jolyn as your guides. Meet at the Bracket's Landing parking lot at 10 AM. Air fills can be obtained close by. The park has bathroom facilities and a rinse area. The tide this coming Saturday is nearly flat all day so current should not be an issue. Local hotels in Edmonds and Lynnwood, Washington are available for those traveling to the park Friday night or staying for dives on Sunday.

Reserve equipment early by calling HydroSports.

Next club dive April 20 at Fox Island.

June 17, 2007

Good Day Friends of HydroSports,

Coming events:

1. Please join local divers for a Special Presentation, 6:30 PM Wednesday, June 20, at HydroSports...Invasive Tunicates in the Hood Canal and Puget Sound, What Can We Do? Our speaker, Janna Nichols, is a Northwest REEF Advanced Assessment Team Member.

2. Northwest Dive News’ fifth annual Treasure Hunt will be held Saturday, June 23, in Tacoma’s Point Defiance Park. This is the largest gathering of divers in the Pacific Northwest and is a great chance for non-divers to learn about the sport.

"We need volunteers" says Rick Stratton, editor. Call Northwest Dive News to assist.

This year’s Treasure Hunt promises to be the best ever with many new events. Besides entering the underwater treasure hunt, attendees can tryout some of the latest dive equipment on the market.

Divers can try Oceanic’s new DataMask. This state-of-the-art mask puts all dive computer-linked data as a heads up display right in front of divers’ eyes allowing more concentration on diving safely and enjoying the dive.

Try diving dry with a Whites drysuit. Many divers are intimidated by cool water temperatures in Puget Sound. Drysuits keep divers warm and dry. Try one at the Treasure Hunt for free.

Underwater photography contest and camera demonstration. Divers can try the newest camera from Bonica and enter to win $700 worth of camera equipment. New gear from Kapitol Reef and IST will be available for trials.

Saturday, June 23: 8 a.m. Diver registration; 9 to 11 a.m. Seminars; 1 p.m. Treasure Hunt

Contests and Prizes: Divers have a chance to win more than $40,000 in prizes. Dive trips to Mexico’s Sea of Cortez, Papua New Guinea, Florida and British Columbia are included along with dive and snorkeling gear as well as local dive charters.

Free Seminars: Experts will present seminars on diving using rebreathers and dive travel in British Columbia. Certified dive instructors will provide safety, guidance and training advice.

3. Save July 22 for the Annual Scuba Rally at the Big Cliff Reservoir. Win prizes, dive one of our favorite local sites, raise money for Marion-Polk Food Share and enjoy a barbecue. Entry fee is $10.00 plus two cans of food and includes coupons for two air fills.

June 10, 2007

Good morning Friends of HydroSports,

Today I am excited to invite you to participate in three upcoming trips.

Trip one: Dive with HydroSports Divemasters Carol and Gregg Cline at Rendezvous Dive Lodge June 25 to 28, 2007. Rendezvous is located west of Port Alberni, British Columbia in Barkley Sound and is accessible only by boat. Contact Carol and Gregg for more details at cccline@hotmail.com.

Next opportunity: Dive with Mark Fischer at Porpoise Bay Charters in the Sechelt Inlet of British Columbia October 10 to 14, 2007. Porpoise Bay Charters is the official caretaker of the HMCS Chaudiere, the first of the Canadian ships sunk as an artificial reef nearly 10 years ago. The Sechelt Inlet is famous for drift dives such as the Skookumchuck Narrows and Agamemnon Pass as well as wall dives. Nudibranch, wolf eel, GPO (Giant Pacific Octopus) and playful seals are common. Final price of this trip will be determined by June 20. Information can be found at http://www.porpoisebaycharters.com/

Now the BIG news! We have a date to travel to the Galapagos: July 22 to 29, 2010. As many of you know, I have been trying to secure a full boat charter to visit the Galapagos for nearly a year. The demand for full boat charters is so high and the restrictions on dive charters by the Ecuador government so strict, that charters sell out years in advance.

We’ll be diving aboard the Galapagos Aggressor, part of the Aggressor Fleet. The Galapagos Aggressor was refitted in 2003 and has nearly 20 years experience bringing guests to this most isolated and unique area of the world, one of the seven underwater wonders of the world.

Space is available for only 12 more guests (the Aggressor hosts 14 guests and 9 crew). The charter cost aboard the Aggressor is $3895 per person. Additional costs to be determined are airfare from Portland to Ecuador to San Cristobal airport in the Galapagos, hotel stays on the mainland on our inbound and outbound flights, national park fees, port fees and fuel surcharges. Our booking agent estimates the final cost to be $5500 per person.

A non-refundable $200 per person cash or check deposit is required with your reservation.

Visit http://www.hydrosports.com/travel.html#Galapagos for more details. Please call Mark Fischer, 503-304-5383 with questions.

The Adventure of a Lifetime Begins at HydroSports!

    February 10, 2007

Good morning HydroSports Dive Team,

One bed remains available for our trip to the Wakatobi Dive Resort, June 30 to July 16, 2007. We may be able to secure more space if requested. Trip price, $4859*. Call Mark for details.

Finding space in the Galapagos in 2007 is proving difficult. I am expecting final notice from several liveaboards about availability early next week. We may have to visit in 2009. Alternate plans for summer 2007 are being investigated.

Diving last weekend at the Yellow House and aboard the Downtime at Flagpole and Rosie’s Ravine was great! 20 to 30 foot vis, calm water, loads of life. Jeff was so excited when getting back onto the Downtime after our dive at Flagpole he asked Diane Coleman for a thesaurus so he could find the words to describe his experience.

So what’s on the immediate horizon?

Tuesday, February 13, 6 PM, Advanced Open Water Diver orientation meeting.  Join Mark at the store and plan your Advanced Open Water dives March 2, 3 and 4.

The DPV (Dive Propulsion Vehicle) Specialty is scheduled for Feb 15th and 22nd with the Open Water Dives at Edmunds Underwater Park, Edmunds, Washington, on February 25th. Course cost is $90.00 and includes the use of a DPV and Certification Card. Class fee, two nights instruction and 2 Dives with Shawn Fisher as your instructor.

Scooters are really fun. You can glide through the water and turn sharp around corners. Mostly they are more fun due to very little effort on your part to get around. There are safety aspects to DPV diving that you must know about. The class is a must. Once certified you can rent them at only $25 for the weekend. Contact Shawn at 503-304-5383 or e-mail at  shawn@hydrosports.com  to reserve your spot as DPV’s are limited.

Shawn will be at Hoodsport on Monday February 19 (that’s Presidents Day) for a special Pacific Adventures Boat Dive on board the Downtime with Don and Diane Coleman. 2 seats are available for this trip. Come along to see some of the best that Hood Canal offers.  Please call Shawn ASAP for details and to reserve your seat now.

Friday, February 23: Divers Alert Network Oxygen First Aid for Scuba Diving Instructor course, 9 AM to 12 PM. Call Mark to register by February 14.

Sunday, February 25: Dive the Edmonds Underwater Park in Edmonds, Washington 15 miles north of Seattle. The park has been developed and expanded for the past four decades by local divers. Meet us at the park at 9 AM for a site briefing. First dive about 9:30 AM. Consider a motel room Saturday night in Edmonds or Lynnwood, WA.

Friday, March 2, We will be aboard the Downtime doing two boat dives in the Hood Canal with Don and Diane Coleman. We board at 1 PM and return to Pleasant Harbor about 5:30 PM. A two-tank dive is $70 and includes hot soup, hot dogs, fresh baked bread sticks and Diane’s famous chocolate chip cookies or apple crisp for dessert. Call Mark to reserve space today!

Saturday and Sunday March 3 and 4, we’ll be at the Yellow House in Hoodsport with an Open Water class. Join us for fun dives Saturday afternoon or evening and share the house. Space at the house is limited, call soon to join us.

Thursday March 1, Open Water Class 118 begins with an orientation session at 6 PM. Share the adventure of diving and bring your friends to our wonderful sport.

March 14, 6 PM, Advanced Open Water orientation meeting.

April 2, 5:30 PM, Divemaster orientation Monday.

April 4, 6 PM, Rescue Diver orientation Wednesday.

April 5 to 8, Diveheart Instructor and Buddy training. Prepare to train or help train physically challenged divers. We are seeking assistance from divers and non-divers who can help with grant preparation, have connections to the physically challenged community both military and civilian and with connections to the medical community serving the physically challenged. Call Mark for information or visit

http://www.hydrosports.com/Diveheart/HydroSports_Diveheart_Training.htm

Shawn has set up several package deals for BCD, Regulator, Octo, Gauges and Steel Tanks for as little as $899.  Come in to talk to Shawn about these package deals and set up a payment schedule that is just right for you. Come talk about any gear that you would like no matter what brand or product. Just come see Shawn!!

BARE Drysuits are in stock and on SALE. You can own your own dry suit and never have to rent one again. These are fully insulated to protect you from our cold water plus they are comfortable to wear and put on. Latex seals or neoprene. It is your choice. You can customize your new suit to your needs. Custom sizing is also available at NO CHARGE when purchasing at regular price. I have several in stock right now for you to try on. Again call SHAWN at the shop and schedule a fitting or just come by and see, feel and touch these suits. You’ll be impressed.

It’s that time of year again! You know; when that regulator gets taken out of its bag to be inspected or serviced. Get an early start on you Annual Services of Tank, Regulator, BCD’s and Computers. Check the dates and see if it will be time for their inspections soon. Don’t wait too long because the service department is expecting a rush, usually around tax time.

We want to get a consensus on a product to see if there is any interest or enthusiasm for Underwater Metal Detectors. Shawn has owned one before and he had a blast with it. Dear Friends of HydroSports,

Good news! Fall has arrived; my wife is raking leaves, we’ve had some serious rain and snow should start falling in the Cascades any day now. By the way, the visibility at Hoodsport has opened up to over 30 feet and I saw only two lion’s mane jellies two weeks ago. The best part of the diving year has begun.

So what’s HydroSports got in store for you in the next 60 Days? Plenty!

First, Shawn and I attended the DEMA Show (Dive Equipment Marketing Association) in Orlando last week. I attended PADI’s Retail Association and Course Director Updates. These two days of education make sure HydroSports brings you the latest services, education, programs and products. I was joined at the Retail Association meeting by PADI retailers from as far away as Russia. Shawn is attending technical seminars on many of the products HydroSports services to insure we provide thorough and timely repairs and warranty work for your regulators, BCD’s and computers. Watch for a digital underwater video camera and housing for under $900 coming to HydroSports next week.

Upcoming events:

June 9, 2006

Dear Friends of HydroSports,

Summer arrives June 21 and we’re wasting no time helping you get in the water. If you missed our dives on Memorial Day at the Detroit and Big Cliff Reservoirs, you have more opportunities to explore these local dive favorites.

Help us feed our neighbors! Sunday, July 2, the 9th Annual HydroSports Scuba Rally will take place at the Big Cliff Reservoir. The Rally invites all divers to participate in an underwater rally course visiting five skill stations and using your dive skills to perform some basic dive activities. At station four, each diver will pull a numbered ball out of a mesh bag. When the rally is over, the numbered balls are exchanged for prizes donated by HydroSports vendors.

We’re adding a twist to this year’s rally. The entrance fee includes a donation of two can of food to be contributed to the Marion-Polk Food Share Program plus $5.00. The $5.00 fee will provide a barbecue lunch for participants. Family members are welcome to join us for the barbecue for $5.00. Please register at HydroSports by June 30. Food Share is the central distribution point for food for over 45 non-profit and social service organizations that provide food to in-need families in our area. Bring your cans of food to HydroSports and help us fill a 55 gallon barrel.

Watch for opportunities to participate in the Great Annual Fish Count in July. HydroSports will be conducting Fish Count dives and you're invited to join us. Contact Mark for further information.

Next, save August 13 for our annual Clear Lake Dive and Family Picnic. Last year I measured the horizontal visibility in the lake at OVER 285 feet. Clear Lake is filled by melting snow percolating through the Cascade Aquifer. The cold, clear water erupts from volcanic vents in the floor of the north end of the lake. The cold water preserves the trunks of submerged trees carbon dated at over 1000 years old. The volcanic ash that coats the floor of the lake can be a tell tale sign when a diver gets too close to the lake floor. Bring your family and enjoy this beautiful Cascade mountain destination. Hiking trails, row boats and canoes and picnic tables are available. A lodge serves hot food and rents cabins. The weather forecast for August 13 is sunny, 88 degrees.

Prepare to earn Divers Alert Network’s Dive Emergency Specialist credential this year. Attend the orientation session Thursday, July 6 at 6:30 PM. HydroSports will conduct all the courses for this credential several times between July and December. The DES credential is earned by holding the DAN Oxygen Provider and Advanced Oxygen Provider credentials plus three additional DAN dive safety certification.

Speak to Shawn to earn PADI Specialties this summer. Shawn is offering great prices on a wide variety of specialties this summer.

Join us at the Yellow House in Hoodsport August 4 to 6 for a Specialty Diver training weekend.

Dive the Oregon Coast Aquarium Dive August 18, 19, 20, and try out a Diving Unlimited International dry suit, buoyancy vest and Weight and Trim harness. Details in the next issue of Sentient Seas Journal.

Join HydroSports Dive and Travel Sept 9 at the Big Cliff Reservoir for a shore and underwater cleanup event as part of International Clean Up Day.

Coming in July...Watch for PADI’s Who’s With Me program. Give your friends a $50 discount coupon on their PADI Open Water class. Refer two friends and receive a $150 coupon to use on your next PADI course.

Our summer is going to busy. Make you summer busy, too!

February 19, 2006

Dear Friends of HydroSports,

So much has happened since our last communication. You know we’ve moved to 3846 River Road North, next door to Gold’s Gym in Keizer.

Since the move we’ve unpacked most of the boxes, merchandised the retail area, set up the service center, expanded the compressor system (with twice the storage capacity), assembled the rinse area and inventory racks, wired our computer network and are working on setting up the new classroom.

Huge thanks to everyone who invested their time and energy helping us move, unpack, decorate and set up. The move could not have been completed so quickly or efficiently without help.

Many of you have come to visit during our reassembly period. Your encouragement is appreciated.

So how will our new location help you?

  • Easier access off and onto River Road, we now have a traffic light
  • Loads of parking, in fact, nearly 350 spaces in front, plus parking spaces at the back door
  • We now have a speaker/door bell at the back door
  • We have twice the stored compressed air, we can now fill your tanks more easily
  • Shawn’s service center is more efficient further shortening service time
  • We’re selling our year old Zeagle rental equipment and have brand new BCD’s, regulators and computers coming in the next few weeks
  • We're offering more PADI Specialty classes more often
  • We're hosting monthly regional shore and boat diving opportunities
  • We're planning exotic travel to the Wakatobe Resort in Indonesia in June 2007.
  • HydroSports is bringing you the opportunity to share an evening with Jean-Michel Cousteau. Remember Jacques son? John-Michel is a dive industry icon in his own right and he will be speaking in Salem May 20.

What’s on the calendar in the next few months?

  • Saturday, February 25, help assemble the next newsletter starting at 10 AM.
  • March 2, Discover Scuba Diving and Rusty Diver Night
  • March 4 and 5, Underwater Navigator Specialty Dives
  • March 18 and April 10, Emergency First Response Instructor Course
  • March 19, boat dives with Bandito Charters in Tacoma
  • Instructor Development Course, March 29 to April 2, April 8 and 9.
  • April 8 and 9, Search and Recovery Specialty Dives
  • April 20 to 23, San Juan Island Boat Dive Trip with Bandito Charters
  • May, Underwater Digital Photography Specialty
  • May 19 to 21, SCUBA Tour comes to Keizer as part of the Keizer Iris Festival
  • May 20, Jean-Michel Cousteau speaks in Salem. Tickets for dinner and/or presentation available at HydroSports!
  • Look for details on the web site or in the upcoming issue of Sentient Seas Journal, HydroSports newsletter.

  January 1, 2006

Warmest Greetings!

Dear Friends of HydroSports,

2006 has arrived and HydroSports is dedicated to helping you achieve all your scuba diving goals and dreams as well as goals of our own.

By now you know that HydroSports is planning to relocate to the Keizer Village Center, one block north of our current location. The new address will be 3846 River Road North, Keizer. We'll be between Gold's Gym and the soon to open ATA Karate studio. Construction on our new home is in progress; the walls are due to be painted January 7 to 9, flooring is going down January 10 to 12, lighting is going up January 13 and 14. Final work is due January 16 to 20.

Saturday, January 21 is moving day and you're all invited to help. If you have trailers, trucks, vans, hand trucks or a smile, please join us at 9 AM at our current location. We'll finish packing, load and move. We'll unpack, break for lunch (I'm buying), and start reassembling the sales floor, classroom and rental area. If you have an hour or two or all day, please come join the fun.

So what else is going on? Our Holiday Sale has become a Moving Sale. Nearly everything at the store is on sale. If you buy it on sale before January 21, we don't have to move it. All our Zeagle rental regulators and BCD's are on sale. Lights, knives, tanks, wet suits, etc., are all on sale.

Guidelines 2005, the latest recommendations on CPR, have been released and now recommend 30 chest compressions to 2 ventilations. More information can be found by clicking here. HydroSports urges everyone to learn how to save a life by performing CPR and how to use an Automated External Defibrillator. Classes will be conducted frequently at HydroSports. The life you save might me mine, one of your family members or a co-workers.

Would you like to earn the PADI National Geographic Diver specialty certification while diving in the exhibit tanks of the Oregon Coast Aquarium? Nothing is certain yet, however, discussion is underway. If you are interested, please let me know.

Sunday, January 15, join me at the Edmonds Underwater Park, just north of Seattle, for a day of diving. Meet at the Bracket's Landing parking lot at 9:30 AM for a briefing.

HydroSports has scheduled a two tank boat dive on Monday, January 16, with Pacific Adventure, departing out of Pleasant Harbor, WA. The price is $65. I need confirmation from three or more guests by Thursday, January 5 to guarantee the trip. I have room for five divers on this trip. We'll be going to more challenging and less often visited sites in the Hood Canal.

Shawn is beginning an Equipment Specialty class Wednesday, January 18. The class fee is $95 and includes books, certification, and three nights of hands on training. Shawn is one of the best service technicians on the west coast.

Rescue Diver and Divemaster training begins in January. The Rescue class may be completed through Chemeketa Community College as a two credit class; the Divemaster class is a three credit class. You may also participate in the class through HydroSports with no CCC credit.

The DAN Oxygen Provider class scheduled for January 21 has been rescheduled for February 11. Learn how to manage, deploy and coordinate life saving oxygen in a variety of scuba diving scenarios.

So, will 2006 be a busy diving year for you? How can we help you reach your diving goals? You can help HydroSports by continuing to bring your friends, family members and co-workers to HydroSports for training, equipment purchases, travel guidance and dive trip participation. Your support, loyalty and friendship have fueled our growth and dedication since 1994. What a great compliment you pay to HydroSports each time you call, visit or refer a friend.

Vinaka vaka levu!

Sincerely,

Mark Fischer

Dear Friends of HydroSports,

So much news, I want to make sure you are all up to date!

First the bad news: Underwater Kinetics and Diving Unlimited International have announced price increases effective August 1, 2006. Next the good news: Place an order for UK or DUI products by July 28 at HydroSports and receive a 15% to 20% savings on your prepaid order.

Travel opportunities abound:

Join HydroSports in Hoodsport August 6 and 7. Weekend lodging fee is $150 per person and includes a two tank boat dive, one day at Sund Rock, and two air fills. News Flash! HydroSports and Gold’s Gym have become partners in adventure and fitness. Gold’s Gym members who participate in a Discover Scuba Diving experience at HydroSports will be entered into a drawing for a free PADI Open Water Scuba Class. HydroSports customers may pick up a free 7 Day pass to either the Keizer or Salem Gold’s Gym locations.

Our Clear Lake Family Dive and Picnic has been rescheduled from Saturday August 13 to Sunday, August 14. This will allow HydroSports staff to participate in a Pool Party and Discover Scuba Diving event at Gold’s Gym in Keizer.

Last...

A few of you have noticed the For Lease sign in front of the store and asked if HydroSports is planning to relocate. I have advised our landlord that we are considering relocating when our lease expires in several months. Relocation is not certain, we may choose to stay. The landlord has decided to look for a new tenant in the event HydroSports decides to relocate.

Rest assured we plan to continue to serve the scuba diving community in the Pacific Northwest for many years to come.

Please come by and visit or call. Our mission includes helping you reach your scuba diving goals and dreams.

Dear Friends of HydroSports,

Does it feel like summer is finally here? I hope so. Let's take advantage of the great weather by getting wet! Get
out your calendar and make some plans! Watch for the next edition of the Sentient Seas Journal next week. In the
meantime, a news flash.

Flash! July 4 Weekend Rental Special

HydroSports announces special rental equipment prices for the July 4 weekend. Rent a Zeagle Stiletto BCD, Envoy
Deluxe regulator system, wet suit, three tanks and weights for $30, a $23 savings over the normal three day rental fee.
Rent a DUI or Mobby’s Dry Suit and undergarment for the weekend for $60, a $30 savings. Call to reserve your adventure. Remember, HydroSports has steel HP 100 tanks available to rent.

Flash! Scuba Rally July 17

Take a plunge at the Big Cliff Reservoir July 17. Win prizes donated by HydroSports suppliers. Share a barbeque lunch
and the company of local divers. Dive an underwater rally course consisting of five skill stations that allow you to use your
diving ability. At one station you’ll select a numbered foam ball. The number corresponds to a prize provided by such
HydroSports vendors at Bandito Charters, Pacific Adventure Charters, XS Scuba, Zeagle Systems, Oceanic, Aeris,
H2Odyssey, Diving Unlimited International, Mobby’s and more.

Register by calling HydroSports, 503-304-5383

Flash! Peak Performance Buoyancy Specialty July 13

Do you have difficulty staying off the bottom or hovering in mid-water? Do you wish you could spend more time
underwater? Do you struggle trying to stay in a horizontal, streamlined position while diving?

If you would like to improve your trim, extend your bottom time, drop pounds from your weight system and feel more in
control as a diver, the Peak Performance Buoyancy Specialty may be just what you are looking for.

Register for this rewarding specialty training program at HydroSports. Orientation meeting July 13, 6 PM. Pool dive to
be planned. Open water dives August 6 and 7, Divers Inn, Hoodsport, WA.

Flash! Bandito Charters July 23, September 11

Walk the plank! Jump off the Sampan into Puget Sound and enjoy the convenience of diving our local waters with the
help of Bandito Charters and HydroSports. Our planned sites for the day are KVI Tower and Fox Island’s east wall.

The $65 fee includes two boat dives, lunch and beverages on board. Register at HydroSports.

Flash! Clear Lake Dive and Picnic August 13

Saturday, August 13 will be hot and sunny, a perfect day for a dive in Oregon’s coldest lake. Clear Lake is filled by
melting snow from the Cascade Range which erupts from the underground aquifer through vents in the bottom of the lake.
The water is clear and cold. The volcanic ash bottom of the lake is light and easily disturbed; bring your best buoyancy
control to avoid stirring up the bottom. We dive here because of the 200 foot + visibility (as long as we don't kick up the
bottom).

A pot luck lunch after the dive is a great way to share the day with you non-diving family and friends. The lake rents
canoes and row boats, is circled by a beautiful walking trail and surrounded by steep forested hills.

Flash! October 2005 Dive Trip, Nanaimo BC. 10 Divers maximum!

Come to Nanaimo with HydroSports October 27 to 30, 2005. Take advantage of great fall visibility and explore British
Columbia
’s Emerald Sea. Enjoy three days of drift and wreck diving including Dodd’s Narrows, the HMCS Saskatchewan,
HMCS Cape Breton and the recently sunk Rivtow Lion. Dive with a local seal colony. We’ll dive from the comfort of the
50 foot MV Shawn Tanis operated by Divers Choice Charters. Hot lunch is prepared onboard daily. Aluminum 80’s, air
fills and weight belts are provided. We’re staying at the Coast Bastion Inn, a comfortable downtown hotel with pool and hot
tub.

Trip cost is $425 per person. Non divers, $175. Prices are per person double occupancy. A $100 deposit is due with your reservation. Full payment is due October 15. No refunds after October 1. 10 Divers maximum. (Did I say this before?)

Flash! February 2006, Honduras, Whale Sharks! Oh my!

Plan to dive with the largest fish in the ocean, a Whale Shark. No worries, whale sharks are filter feeders eating the
smallest microscopic animals found in the oceans. Details soon.

Flash! Spring Break 2006, Port Hardy

Spend Spring Break diving Port Hardy, BC, at the northern tip of Vancouver Island. God’s Pocket Resort, operating for
over 18 years on Hurst Island, will be our home for four days and nights. Diving here is exquisite! Cold nutrient-rich water
wells up from the deep Pacific and feeds the underwater residents of the Queen Charlotte Straight. Your trip fee is $945
per person, double occupancy. A $100 deposit is required with your reservation. No refunds after February 1, 2006. The
trip is limited to 12 guests. Non diver rate not available.

PACKAGE INCLUDES:

  • “Hurst Isle” boat ride to and from God’s Pocket Resort
  • Meals, Baked Goods, and hot and cold drinks.

Dear Friends of HydroSports,

As you may know, HydroSports has partnered with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife which administers the
Becoming an Outdoors Woman program in Oregon.

Through BOW, HydroSports will be teaching a PADI/National Geographic Open Water Diver class starting May 10.
Participants will earn a PADI/National Geographic Open Water Diver certification.

Using federal excise tax funding (taxes on hunting and fishing equipment sales) BOW is subsidizing the class. This means
that participants will pay $400 for a class we sell for $670.

Included with the class are the National Geographic Open Water Diver manual, log book binder, NG Diver Almanac and
DVD. Additionally each participant will receive (and will keep) a mask, snorkel, fins, boots, gloves and hood ($225 value). Participants will enjoy the use of a dry suit during all open water dives. Participants will be provided with all additional
rental equipment needed for pool and open water dives.

Limited space is available in this class. If you know a woman or man age 15 or older who wants to learn to dive and can
participate in class starting May 10, please forward this email, advise them to print the attached application and bring
it to HydroSports as soon as possible.

Follow this link to read a article in the Statesman.

Your assistance spreading the excitement of scuba diving is greatly appreciated.

Dear Friends of HydroSports,

Attached is the Becoming an Outdoors-Woman scuba training flyer and application. Click here for flyer.

The flyer describes three events:

Event 1, two PADI National Geographic Diver classes taught by HydroSports Dive and Travel. Space is limited to 10 participants in each class. The cost of this BOW sponsored class is $400. Without BOW sponsorship the National Geographic Diver course cost is $670.

Participation is based on a first-come, first-served basis. We expect these two classes to fill to capacity quickly.

Event 2, Spearfishing training dives. Learn which fish are legal and how to use appropriate tools.

Event 3, Spearfishing at Cape Lookout.

BOW is a national program funded by federal excise taxes collected when hunting and fishing equipment is purchased. State tax dollars are not used to fund BOW.

Dear Friends and Staff,

I am excited to share several news updates with you.

1. The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife's Becoming an Outdoors-Woman program is partnering with HydroSports to offer a series of scuba events. The first event is a National Geographic Diver certification course. Two sessions are planned. The first starts April 30 and is a Saturday-only class. The second session starts May 10. ODFW plans to have details and registration forms posted to their web site by April 11. Watch http://www.dfw.state.or.us/ over the weekend for details. Registration takes place through HydroSports.

2. Stuart and Sharon McVey will be hosting a series of free Discover Scuba Diving events Saturday, April 16 from 10 AM to 3 PM at the Dallas Aquatic Center in conjunction with April Pool's Day, a national event dedicated to water safety awareness.

Stuart asks you all for your help coordinating DSD participants, helping choose fins and masks and helping control DSD participants and others in the pool. Stuart needs the help of divers and dive professionals. Stuart is hoping to have three or four divers in the water with each group of 8 DSD participants, one or two on the pool deck and a staff member conducting briefings prior to each of the three DSD sessions.

If you are able to invest a few hours with Stuart and Sharon please contact me at HydroSports, 503-304-5383 by Friday, April 8. I'll help coordinate scheduling.

3. HydroSports and Chemeketa Community College are offering a PADI Rescue Diver course. The course runs on Wednesday evenings starting April 13. Two pool sessions are planned on Tuesday nights. The open water training weekend is scheduled for June 4 and 5. I have space for store students to join the class. Taking the class through Chemeketa earns 2 credits for participants. Call me to register.

4. We have boat dive space available this coming Saturday, April 9, with Bandito Charters. A two-tank boat dive is $65. Mike Desirey is hosting this event. The next Bandito boat dives are scheduled May 22.

December 28, 2005

Dear Friends of HydroSports,

Winter is in full swing, we’re into the best diving period of the year and HydroSports is gearing up to help you make the most of your scuba diving goals.

This week, December 28 to 31, HydroSports is clearing off the shelves to make room for new equipment coming in January. Our rental regulator and BCD’s are on sale. Our rental Mobby dry suits are on sale. A used Zeagle Ranger and Escape, each size large, are on sale. Used Faber high pressure steel 80 and 100 cubic foot tanks are on sale. Underwater Kinetics eLED light heads for the C4 and C8 are on sale. One Citizen HyperAqualand watch is on sale. Help us make room.

So what’s coming? Zeagle Stiletto BCDs and Zeagle Envoy regulator systems will start arriving in mid January for our rental department. By late January expect new DUI dry suits in rental.

HydroSports has renewed our commitment to the National Geographic Diver program. We are still the only dive center in Oregon offering this expanded Open Water Diver course. The NG Diver course expands training in buoyancy control, underwater navigation and marine identification and includes two boat dives and use of a dry suit during training. Recommend your friends start their dive training with HydroSports by participating in a National Geographic Diver course. We continue to teach the PADI Open Water Diver course as well.

Take advantage of our December Enriched Air Specialty special price. Register before December 31. Dives February 5 or 6, 2005.

Discover Scuba Diving events are planned January 12 and 29.

Janna Nichols has been invited to teach the Pacific Northwest Fish and Invertebrate Identification specialties at HydroSports in March 9 and April 20.  Find out what lurks in our local waters. Have fun learning from and diving with Janna! These specialty courses count toward your PADI Master Scuba Diver credential.

Bandito Charters has a full calendar of boat dives planned with HydroSports this year. Look at the store calendar for dates or visit the store.

Can’t get enough Canadian diving? We’re headed to the Sechelt Inlet for a three full days of diving over Spring Break. Experience the beauty of the HMC Chaudiere, the rush of diving in current swept channels and the convenience of diving from a custom-built dive launch. Watch for details later this week.

PADI’s Rescue Diver Course has been updated to include state of the art rescue technique and philosophy. HydroSports staff will be participating in training soon and the new Rescue Diver Course will be available starting March 2. Learn to save a life by anticipating, preventing or responding to problems that occur around dive sites.

PADI Assistant Instructor training starts February 19 at HydroSports. If you are ready to take on an instructional role in dive training, this is the step beyond Divemaster. Call Mark for details.

We appreciate the opportunity to serve the greater Oregon dive community and the support HydroSports has received from each of you over the past 10 years. Have a safe and Happy New Year. We look forward to seeing you soon.

Dear Friends of HydroSports

I received news Thursday night from Zeagle Manufacturing, manufacturer of my favorite Buoyancy Vests and Regulators, that they have extended special Fall pricing indefinitely on several of their BCD's and regulators.

I don't know if any of you are considering purchasing these items in the near future, however, if you are and can take advantage of theses prices quickly, you can save yourself some money and dive some of the very best dive gear available.

The items available are:
Zeagle Ranger BCD MSPR $699, Sale $549.20
Zeagle Stiletto BCD (brand new model) MSRP $599, Sale $429.20
Zeagle Escape BCD MSRP $495, Sale $349.20
Zeagle ZX-50D Regulator MSRP $479, Sale $333.20
Zeagle Flathead XP Regulator MSRP $499, Sale $349.20
Zeagle Flathead VI (my personal regulator) MSRP $549, Sale $399
Zeagle Envoy Alternate Air Source regulator MSRP $139, Sale $111.20

I typically sell these items in a "package" at 20% off the retail price, so the trade show pricing allows me to reduce the price by another $75 when purchasing a regulator, alternate air source and BCD as a package. Gauge sets
and dive computers can also be "packaged" with your purchase.

To learn more about Zeagle products, made in Florida, you can call me directly and/or visit the Zeagle web site, www.zeagle.com. Zeagle regulators and BCD have received excellent reviews in Rodale's Magazine over the years.
Zeagle began manufacturing equipment for the cave diving and wreck diving communities in Florida 25 years ago. Both of these diving communities require high performance, rugged, dependable equipment. Zeagle regulators are regularly tested by the US Navy Experimental Diving Unit in Panama City, Florida and significantly out perform the Navy requirements for selecting regulators.

So, enough from me. I never want to come across as a pushy sales person, so please do not ready any pushiness into this email. If this opportunity is one you can use, great! If not, please come see me when it is time to purchase personal life support equipment.

Best regards,

Mark Fischer

Dear Friends of HydroSports,

Did you see the lunar eclipse this week? I knew the shadow on the face of the moon was unusual, however, I did not confirm that an eclipse had taken place until the next morning. Next lunar eclipse, 2007.

Have you mailed your ballot? If not, vote and drive it to a collection point by the end of the day Tuesday, November 2.

Turn your clocks back one hour Sunday morning at 2 AM.

Now for the news...Please consider joining me for several coming events:

1. Sunday, October 31, a two-tank boat dive aboard Bandito Charters. Board at 9:30 AM, Point Defiance Marina; dive at Mile Post 8 and North Wall. Cost $60. Bring a 10" to 12" pumpkin. Best pumpkin carved in the water wins a free two tank Bandito Boat dive gift certificate. We expect to be back on the dock by 2:30 PM so we can be back in Salem for Trick-or-Treating by 6. I'll be at the store Saturday until 5 PM if you need rental equipment. Reported visibility last weekend at several sites in Puget Sound, 50 feet, yes FIFTY FEET of horizontal vis.

2. Next weekend, November 6 and 7, join us for a fun weekend on the Hood Canal. We've rented the Yellow House/Diver's Inn. We'll dive Octopus Hole and I'd like to explore another site further north, the Shellfish Laboratory in Brinnon. Lodging for the weekend and two air fills, $85 per person. Shawn will be conducting a Rescue class and I'll be conducting an Enriched Air Specialty class. This will be a great weekend to get in a bunch of Hood Canal Dives. Mike Desirey reports 35 to 40 feet of vis last weekend at North Wall. If you want to conduct a REEF Fish ID Survey, please let me know and I'll help you gather the necessary tools.

3. November 12 to 14, join me for three days of boat dives in the San Juan Islands. We board in Anacortes Friday morning at 8:30, do three dives enroute to Friday Harbor. We spend Friday and Saturday night in Friday Harbor. Do three boat dives Saturday and two more dives Sunday while returning to Anacortes. Cost for 8 boat dives, two nights at the Inns at Friday Harbor Suites and lunch aboard the boat each day is only $350. This promises to be some of the best diving of the year in the San Juan Islands. Please call me for further information.

4. Several divers have asked about becoming volunteer divers at the Oregon Coast Aquarium. I will be conducting the required training class, PADI Habitat Diver Distinctive Specialty, in November. Dates are hazy at this time, however, likely dates are November 17, 20, 24 and December 2. The class completes with two days of training in the exhibit tanks at the aquarium. Class fee $175 for a class of three or more. Please contact me if you would like to know more. Diving as a volunteer diver is a tremendous way to put lots of dives in your log book, develop very high level buoyancy skills, dive at the best "shore" dive site in Oregon and learn more about the marine environment from professionals at the aquarium.

5. HydroSports is hosting a Divemaster Orientation meeting November 15 at 5:30 PM. If you wonder what is necessary to assist with classes, work on a dive boat as a professional, lead dive tours or gain the tax benefits of being a PADI Professional, please attend. RSVP to Mark Fischer. This meeting will overview the process, benefits and investments needed to become a PADI Divemaster.

6. November 28. Our last Bandito Charter trip of the year. $60 for a two tank dive including lunch, snacks, beverages. If you've not done a trip with Bandito, prepare to learn how much fun boat diving can be. Space is limited, call for reservations.

7. Assistant Instructor training is planned November 17 to 20, Instructor training is planned December 1 to 5. Mark Fischer, PADI Course Director, and Shawn Fisher, PADI Instructor Development Staff Instructor, will lead the courses.

Look for information about Ships to Reefs, a program to expand the number of artificial reefs build from ships now barely floating in Navy holding areas.

Thank you all for supporting HydroSports, protecting the marine environment, continuing to dive, sharing your excitement with friends, family and co-workers.

Best regards,

July 6, 2004

Dear Friends of HydroSports,

So much is going on this summer it’s hard to decide where to start this update.

First, the new edition of the newsletter, Sentient Seas Journal, is now posted at www.hydrosports.com. Click on the Newsletter button.

Second, I need help assembling the snail mail version of the newsletter on Wednesday night, July 7, starting at 5 PM. Pizza dinner at 6.

Third, the National Geographic Diver program is officially announced. The introduction and orientation session Tuesday July 13 at 6 PM at HydroSports.

Fourth, the July Dive Club meeting starts Thursday, July 15 at 6:30 PM. Our speaker is Steve Nelson speaking about tides and currents.

“A STUDY ON TIDES & CURRENTS”

Growing up in Iowa, Steve didn’t have an occasion to notice tides. In fact, he didn’t even see an ocean until he was 20 years old. Therefore; since watching the waters of Morro Bay, California recede one August day in 1971, he has been fascinated with the forces that cause the earth’s oceans to ebb and flow.

In tonight’s program, Steve will utilize computer animation and other visual effects to present a lively program on the causes and behavior of tides and the currents they produce. With Steve as our guide, we will experience some of the world’s most exotic and extreme tidal phenomena, and then move closer to home to examine the complex patterns of currents produced by the tides of Puget Sound, the Strait of Georgia, and other Pacific Northwest locations. After touching on tips for navigating in tidal currents, he will review sources of information on tide and current predictions. Included will be real time demonstrations of the web’s best free tide sites and an introduction to the leading 'free' and ‘commercial’ tide prediction programs you can install on your PC or MAC.

Steve started sea kayaking in 1983, and joined OOPS in 1989. Since l993, he has served in a variety of positions on the club’s Board of Directors and is currently the club's Trip Coordinator. When not paddling or attending Board meetings, he teaches classes in sea kayak navigation and the use of the GPS, and occasionally finds time to work as a Recreation Planner for the US Forest Service.

Fifth, the Annual Scuba Rally starts at 10:30 AM Saturday, July 17 at the Big Cliff Reservoir. Optional lunch tickets are $8.

Look for a new Diver Propulsion Vehicle this July and take a test dive in the pool. We have an opportunity to make an initial purchase at a BIG discount by August 10. If you’ve every thought about owning a DPV, try this one this July. Call for pool dates this July.

Discover Scuba July 20. DAN Oxygen Provider class July 21. Rusty Diver Night July 22. Rescue Diver orientation July 26. Clear Lake Dive and Family Picnic August 8. Lots of after work dives at Big Cliff all summer.

Assistant Instructor class August 4 to 7. Instructor class August 18 to 22.

Much more in the newsletter and on the web site.

Oh, yes… A new local dive trip to the San Juan Islands November 12 to 14. Eight boat dives, three nights of lodging, lunch on board. Look at page three of the newsletter for details or visit the store for the full low down.

Space may still available for our Cayman Brac trip September 11 to 18. The trip is so popular I’ve booked space in September 2005 at 2004 prices if a deposit is placed by the end of 2004. See the newsletter for details.

Bottom line, get wet this summer.

As always, we thank you for each opportunity to earn your business, help you meet your diving goals, for referring your friends to HydroSports and for your ongoing support.

Best regards,

Mark Fischer

HydroSports needs enthusiastic friends to work 2 hour shifts spreading the joy of diving. I need to meet with volunteers for a one hour planning session on either April 19 at 5:30 PM or May 5 at 6 PM. Free admission and parking is provided for volunteers. Please call or email if you would like to help.

September 10, 2003

Friends of HydroSports,

Heads up! Lots of activity is coming our way; local drift dives, the September dive club meeting and clearance prices on some new and used gear. Best of all, the best diving conditions of the year are just around the corner.

First, I want to sell all HydroSports in stock dry suits and order new suits next month at DEMA so all in stock new and used suits are on sale. New and Used DUI suits at VERY low prices.

I have Mobby’s Armor Shell rental suits in extra small, and medium and a Twin Shell suit in large; any one for only $590. My Typhoon Ranger with dry gloves, relief zipper and field replaceable neck seal is available for only $525. This suit is in good condition and retailed for over $2400 six years ago. I have three DUI rental suits; a men’s CF200X, large and a CLX 450, XL. I also have a woman’s Flex 50/50, large. Your choice, $845 for any of the DUI suits.

I also have a brand new Mobby’s Armor Shell, medium or Twin Shell, XL, MSRP $1450, Sale $899.

Our speakers at the dive club meeting September 18 are Ed and Dale Jacobs. Ed and Dale designed and built a Remote Operated Vehicle to search and videotape the ocean’s floor. In combination with side scan sonar, the ROV has been successful in locating lost cars, missing wrecks and helping solve mysteries in Oregon and Washington. Join us at 6:30 for a pot-luck-dinner and meet the ROV and Ed and Dale at 7 PM as they talk about their experiences as underwater detectives.

More used gear… my Oceanic Data Max Pro Plus 2 computer with compass and quick disconnect can be purchased for $449. The MSRP is $899. My Zeagle Ranger BCD size large with trim pockets and removable 12 lb weight pockets, MSRP $679, is available for $329. My Zeagle Flathead 6 regulator with Aqualung octopus, MSRP $699, is available for $329. Wayne’s medium Malibu BCD, MSRP $479, is only $249. It is time for me to replace my two year old regulator and BCD. I’ve ordered the same equipment for myself.

Drift diving at the Big Cliff Reservoir is in high season as the Detroit Reservoir is drained. Join us Wednesday, October 1 for an after work dive at 5:30 PM at Big Cliff, 50 minutes east of Salem on Highway 22.

HydroSports has chartered the Down Time, operated by Pacific Adventures, on October 26. We have space for six divers on each of two two-tank boat dives. The first departure boards at 8:30 AM at the Pleasant Harbor marina, 15 minutes north of Mike’s Beach Resort. The second boards at 3:00 PM for an afternoon dive and a night dive. The cost is $60 per person with proceeds going to the dive club’s goal of purchasing a DAN Oxygen Kit.

Look for trips to the Edmonds Underwater Park before the end of the year.

Is anyone interested in going back to Nanaimo in mid to late January? We had a great time last year and the weather wasn’t too bad either. Details to come soon.

As the day’s get shorter, the algae bloom ends and we often enjoy 25 to 50 foot visibility at our favorite sites in Washington and British Columbia.

I look forward to visiting and diving with each of you.

Best regards,

Mark Fischer

Dear Friends of HydroSports,

With a bit of a delay, a hiccup and limited fanfare, the new edition of the Sentient Seas Journal is now online (with a minor grammatical error on page two). I'll update the file tomorrow.

This also means that it is time to wrestle with the paper version for those non e-mail receivers. If you have an hour or two this Saturday from noon to 5, please join me at the store. I'll order pizza and soda so we can eat, chat, fold, staple and stuff. Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Loads of news; instructor training at HydroSports, a chance for all divers to test dive DUI dry suits in the tanks at the Oregon Coast Aquarium, upcoming classes, feature products (as well as my personal Zeagle Ranger, BCD, Zeagle Flathead 6 regulator, Oceanic Datamax Pro Plus 2 computer and Ranger dry suit, all of which I'll replace with new editions of the same items) an invitation to join me November 2004 in the Sea of Cortez aboard the Nautilus Explorer (save $100 by booking before September 15) and other articles by me and guest contributor(s).

Please take a look, www.hydrosports.com, and click on the newsletter link on the left side of the front page.

Safe diving,

As a divemaster, you are a dive professional. Many business and tax benefits become available.

A group of 13 guests from HydroSports enjoyed a week of great diving and hospitality aboard the Nautilus Explorer, a 116’ live aboard dive yacht. We traveled from Juneau, Alaska to Prince Rupert, BC. Watch for a story on the web site soon.

While on the Nautilus Explorer, I booked the entire yacht for a week next year. We will be diving in Mexico in the Sea of Cortez from November 7 to 14, 2004. The water will be 82 to 84 degrees, the air 84 to 88, and visibility 30 to 100 feet. Would you like to spend Christmas 2004 or New Years 2005 aboard the Nautilus in the Sea of Cortez? If so, please call me. I have the opportunity to book the ship for a special year end event.

Congratulations are in order for Lena and Ahti Loukojarvi. They are expecting a little boy early in December. When you see Lena working at HydroSports, please don’t let her lift anything heavy.

Congratulations to Sharon Weber and Wayne Dickinson. Both recently completed their PADI Assistant Instructor training. Congratulations to Ivon and Derek Young, Mike Bovard and Dan Chatfield on the successful completion of their Rescue Diver class.

Thanks to Jan Boley for coming through in the pinch. Jan conducted a Discover Scuba class recently with little notice (my oversight) and rescued an offshore dive trip sponsored by the Dive Club by coming on-board at the last minute to divemaster.

Thanks to Steve Camden and Ron Reid, PADI Open Water Instructors, for their enthusiasm and professionalism as they learn the ropes of scuba instruction as it is practiced at HydroSports.

And thanks to all of you who bring your friends and family to HydroSports for classes, equipment, air fills, travel and fun. Your ongoing support is a cornerstone of our success.

Dear Friends of HydroSports,

I sent a message a few days ago inviting a solo female traveler to join a group from HydroSports aboard the Nautilus Explorer July 26 to August 2 at a $500 discount (retail rate $1695, discount rate $1200).

The invitation gets sweeter!

The woman whose spot we are trying to sell is willing to provide enough Alaska Air Frequent Flyer Miles to purchase the Seattle to Juneau portion of the trip for the solo female traveler who buys into the trip.

This means that for $1200 the solo female traveler who joins the trip saves the cost of the air fare for the Seattle to Juneau portion of the trip. The remaining costs that need to be covered are air fare from Prince Rupert, BC to Vancouver, BC and from Vancouver, BC to Seattle. Tips for the crew, souvenirs purchased, etc. are not included.

Some of the travelers are taking a Horizon flight from Portland to Seattle and are returning to Portland.

If you or someone you know is an adventurous traveler and wants to explore some of north Americas most beautiful scenery both below and above the water's surface, this is the trip!

Please call Mark Fischer, group leader, at HydroSports Dive and Travel, 503-304-5383, to inquire further. Further information can be found at www.hydrosports.com and www.nautilusexplorer.com

Dear Friends of HydroSports,

So much new news in the past few days that I need to send a follow up message.

First, a clarification about Luxfer's trade in promotion for their older tanks. I received some questions about the safety of the tanks in question and I want to be sure to dispel any myths I may have started.

Luxfer believes that with careful visual inspection supplemented by inspection with  an eddy current test device (Visual Eddy, Simple Eddy or similar) to be sure that no evidence of sustained load cracking is present, that Luxfer cylinders manufactured between 1972 and 1988 are safe to use. Luxfer's goal with the trade in program is to create an incentive to replace cylinders that are up to 30 years old.

At HydroSports, we charge $25 for an annual visual inspection for these cylinders and this includes a PSI/ SCII visual inspection and testing with a Visual Eddy. Both inspections are done by trained and certified inspectors. We also fill the tank with air. A visual inspection with an air fill for tanks not requiring the Visual Eddy test is $12.00.

The cost of shipping an aluminum 80 to Riverside, California is less than $14.00. So, if you are in the market for a new Luxfer cylinder AND you own an older Luxfer cylinder that qualifies, a net savings of $36 is a good deal.

Now to the FUN news!
  • PADI is continuing it's Bring A Friend program through the end of 2003. Bring three friends to HydroSports (or any PADI dive center). Your three friends complete an Open Water Diver class between April 1, 2003 and December 31, 2003. You list their names and certification numbers on a referral form available at HydroSports. PADI mails you a check for $50.

  • DEMA (the Diving Equipment and Marketing Association, the dive industry trade group) is starting a Bring a Friend program. The same rules apply as the PADI program, however the dates are May 1, 2003 to December 31, 2003. Your three friends complete OW certification, you fill out a DEMA form (available at HydroSports). You mail the form to DEMA. DEMA sends you a check for $50.

  • BUT WAIT, there's more! The individual submitting the referral is also eligible to receive an additional $150.00 from DEMA when they purchase two select pieces of diving hardware from their participating store. Divers can choose hardware from any participating manufacturer so long as their purchase includes at least two of the following: a complete SCUBA regulator, a buoyancy compensator/inflator combination, and/or a full function diving computer.

  • Don't go away! HydroSports will also reward you with a free two tank Bandito Boat dive for each four divers you refer using our HydroSports Try Scuba Diving certificate who complete the same Open Water certification class for which you are claiming $50 from DEMA and $50 from PADI. Try Scuba Diving certificates will be included with the next issue of Sentient Seas Journal, are available at HydroSports today and will be available soon on our web site, www.hydrosports.com.

  • So, for sharing the excitement of diving with four friends, you pocket $100, get a $60 two-tank boat dive and have four new dive buddies. What are you waiting for?
Thank you all for your ongoing support of HydroSports.

Best regards,

April 6, 2003

 Welcome Friends of HydroSports,

Daylight savings time began this morning at 2 AM and the sun is shining as I write this message, both sure signs that it’s time to dive.

We have lots of news to share.

 ·   The web site has received a face lift thanks to the work of Wayne Dickinson. Take a look:

      www.hydrosports.com.

·    It’s time to assemble the next issue of the newsletter. Two assembly times: April 8, Tuesday afternoon and evening. April 9, Wednesday afternoon and evening. If you have even 30 minutes to help, your assistance will be greatly appreciated. Watch for the newsletter in the mail at the end of next week or online mid week this week.

The package includes nine boat dives, three nights of lodging and meals for only $350. And you don’t have to take a plane, a thirty minute ferry ride north of Vancouver BC and we’re there! Arrive May 29, depart June 1. A $150 deposit is due with your reservation; the balance is due May 1

  ·   Our Winter Open Water Class special ends with our classes in May. We’d love to have you or your friends join us as certified divers. You can complete your open water training dives with us in Washington or you may travel to nearly any dive destination in the world and complete your training with a PADI instructor while on your vacation.

  ·    Join us this summer as we explore dive sites beyond Hoodsport. We plan to dive Port Townsend, Port Angeles and Sekiu, all on the Olympic Peninsula but beyond the range of the Hood Canal’s algae bloom that is, even now, starting to form near Hoodsport. Besides escaping from the algae bloom, we’ll explore some great new dive sites. Watch for details on the web site’s summer calendar.

Dear Friends of HydroSports,

Heads Up! We had so much fun in Nanaimo last month that I've booked another big value/low cost trip to Canada in late May. We will be traveling to the Sechelt Inlet and diving with Porpoise Bay Charters. Dive the Wreck of the Chaudiere in addition to drift and wall dives. Look for more information at www.hydrosports.com and click on the BC Dive Trip link.

Join me March 8 and 9 at Mike's Beach Resort. We'll be diving Octopus Hole and perhaps a new site for us, the Shellfish Lab. We have the dorm reserved for our base of operations. Lodging and 5 air fills are only $63.30 for the weekend. Come on up, last weekend we had 30+ feet of vis!

We have a few spaces left on the Bandito charter trip March 22, $60 per person for a two tank boat dive in some of Puget Sounds best sites.

Club meeting next month...Scott Cooper, PADI Course Director and Tri Mix Instructor will be showing video of a recent DEEP dive. Scott will also be discussing how to prepare for technical diving. Thursday March 20, 6:30 PM.

Rescue Diver class has begun but there is plenty of time to join. Participate in the must-do class and expand your circle of awareness as a diver and learn to anticipate, prevent or respond to common problems at a dive site. If you dive with a family member or close friend, or simply want to be able to take care of a dive buddy in an emergency, you need to participate in a Rescue Diver class. Call the store for details.

HydroSports is starting a new Organized Referral Program. Each of you will have the opportunity to earn free dive trips on Bandito Charters. Those you invite to Discover Scuba or dive classes may also earn reduced costs of Open Water, Advance or Rescue classes or free trips on Bandito Charters. Visit the store to learn how you can participate.

Are you interested in becoming a volunteer diver at the Oregon Coast Aquarium? Contact me for information on the Habitat Diver Specialty, the prerequisite class that leads to training at the OCA and the privilege of diving in the best salt water site in Oregon. Class will start in mid March.

We never forget that our business is focused on meeting your needs. If HydroSports can assist you in any scuba related endeavor, please give us the opportunity to serve you.

Thank you very much for your continued support!

Attention Friends of HydroSports:

I received the following alert from PADI this evening concerning an error in the printing of PADI air and nitrox tables. Please read the following message carefully. If you believe that you have an air or nitrox table that is included in the recall, please stop using it at once and bring it to HydroSports or any PADI dive center. We will make arrangements to exchange the table(s) at no charge. I will leave a copy of this message at HydroSports for Daren, Lena and Sharon (I am in Washington through the weekend assisting with an Instructor training class until Monday).

We've recently discovered printer errors in certain Recreational Dive Planners (RDPs). The problems may appear in six (6) versions of the RDP, including both air and enriched air tables. Our printer is working diligently with us to correct his error.

These tables may be included in Open Water and Enriched Air Crew Paks, book and table combinations, CD-rom combinations and alacart tables shipped between 1 October 2002 and 31 January 2003. Please note that not all RDPs you may have received during this period contain printer errors.

While analysis of the problems shows that the risk of injury from the errors is remote, for the sake of safety, we feel a broad approach to this issue should be taken. We ask that you immediately check your existing inventory and remove any RDPs you received from PADI with the product numbers and production codes listed below. The product number and production code is generally located on the bottom right hand corner on the back of the table. The product number and production code consist of a series of numbers and letters resembling: Product No. 60049 XXXPDJ2.

There may also be a revision date (Rev 10/02) and/or version number (Version 1.0) listed. These numbers are inconsequential. In checking the production code for inaccurate tables, please ignore the first three digits and only check the last four.
